Thank you for your participation in the Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide this past Sunday. Because of your efforts, we were able to send a loud message to the administration, Congress, and the world, letting them know that we refuse to stand idly by as innocent lives are lost to indifference and intolerance. Tens of thousands of individuals – representing people of different religions, races, and political ideologies –joined together in solidarity against the continued genocide. The Reform Jewish Movement, in particular, proved to be a visible presence on the mall, and our voices carried across the crowd. It is thanks to your hard work that our Movement was able to play such a crucial role in this monumental event. Now that the rally is over, it is vital that we continue our work to bring about peace in Darfur. In his speech at the rally, Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center, announced the “30 Days for Darfur” campaign to harness the energy generated by this past weekend’s Save Darfur Rally and other like-events held across the country. Between now and the holiday of Shavuot (June 2, 2006), we will visit a consulate, embassy, or United Nations office for every NATO and African Union country, as well as China and Russia. Reform Jews, along with other Americans of faith, will advocate for urgent action from these foreign governments to do their part to stop the genocide and support UN resolutions to create an effective peace-keeping force with a clear mandate to protect innocent civilian life.
